Anyone can call an earplug “HiFi”. “Concert earplug” and “for musicians” are just as easy to put on a box. There is no adjective police checking any of this before a product page goes live.
So rather than asking you to trust the words, here is what we mean when we use them — and what you can actually check for yourself.
What we mean by HiFi
An earplug can have an apparently respectable attenuation rating and still make music sound terrible.
The reason is simple: the average number does not tell you where the sound is being reduced. If an earplug takes much more level out of the treble than the bass, the result is the familiar muffled sound most people associate with earplugs. The bass appears heavier, vocals move backwards, cymbals disappear and the whole balance of the mix changes.
That is not what we mean by HiFi.
For us, HiFi means reducing the level as evenly as possible across frequency, so the tonal balance is preserved. Not mathematically perfect flatness — ear canals are different and putting anything in one changes the acoustics — but a response that is even enough that the music still sounds like the music. Just quieter.
This is also why a single dB number is not enough when comparing earplugs for music. Two plugs can both be described as “17 dB” and sound completely different if their attenuation curves have different shapes.
We built earplugtests.com because we thought this should be something you can investigate rather than just take our word for. Using ordinary headphones, the test compares your open ear with your plugged ear, frequency band by frequency band, and plots the measured attenuation curve. There is also an EQ validation mode that lets you listen to the measured curve applied to the open-ear signal.
Official protection ratings come from standardized laboratory testing. EarplugTests is a simple way to look at approximate attenuation and, more importantly here, the shape of the response.
Try it with a foam plug. Try it with another plug marketed as HiFi. Try it with Minuendo. That is much more useful than comparing adjectives on packaging.
“For concerts” has to survive the concert
A concert earplug can look great on a frequency-response graph and still fail in practice.
It has to fit securely when you move around. It has to be comfortable for a full set. It has to reduce enough sound for the level and duration you are exposed to. And it has to sound good enough that you do not slowly pull it halfway out because you are missing the music.
That last part matters more than it sounds. Hearing protection only protects you while you are actually wearing it.
This is one reason we have spent so much time on both sound quality and usable attenuation levels. Minuendo LIVE gives a fixed musical attenuation, while Minuendo Adjustable lets you change the reduction continuously as the environment changes. A quiet support act, a loud headline show and standing two metres from a PA are not the same situation.
How much protection you need will always depend on sound level, exposure time and fit. “For concerts” should not mean one magic number. It should mean the product was designed around the realities of live music.
For musicians, the bar is higher
A musician is not only listening to music. They are making decisions from it.
Pitch, timing, attack, vocal level, guitar tone, the room, the other players — all of that information matters. If an earplug changes the spectral balance too much, you start compensating for the earplug. That is exactly what we do not want.
This is also why musicians are useful product testers. They notice things quickly. Dory Lobel uses Minuendo across gigs, concerts and other loud environments because he can still hear the details he needs while bringing the overall level down.
Oddrun Lilja told us about using them in the studio while recording with heavy feedback and extremely high sound levels. That is a good example of what “for musicians” means to us: hearing protection has to work in the situations where sound is not just entertainment, but part of the job.
So why trust us?
Not because we put “HiFi” on the box.
Minuendo grew out of acoustic research at SINTEF and was developed by acoustic scientists, engineers and musicians. We have spent years working on membranes, filters, vents, fit and all the annoyingly small acoustic details that become very audible once you put something in an ear canal. Our earplugs are hand-assembled and individually tested.
But company history is still company history. The more important point is that we are willing to define what we claim.
When we say HiFi, we mean a comparatively even attenuation curve and a natural perceived tonal balance. When we talk about hearing protection, the protection ratings come from standardized testing. When we say “for musicians”, we mean the product has to preserve enough useful detail for people whose work depends on what they hear.
And when there is something useful you can check yourself, we would rather show you how to check it.
Anyone can say HiFi. A better question is: What do you mean by it, what did you measure, and can I hear the difference for myself?
